Perfect Cup Of Coffee The Perfect Cup of Coffee

The ideal cup of coffee is not the same for everyone.  That's because different people prefer different varieties of coffee bean, different degrees of roasting and different methods of preparation.  Despite all these differences, however, there are some things that are necessary in order to acheive a great cup of coffee every time.

  1. Ensure your equipment is clean. Coffee grounds and oils that build up on your equipment can give the coffee a bitter or rancid flavour. The coffee quipment itself should also be made of stainless steel or glass (depending on the chosen coffee style) never aluminium.
  2. Buy your coffee beans as soon after roasting as possible. Only buy coffee that is in airtight packaging.
  3. Store the coffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator
  4. If you are grinding the beans yourself, only grind what you need immediately prior to use.
  5. The size of the grind must be suitable to the chosen coffee preparation method. For example, espresso requires a fine grind, French press requires a coarser grind.
  6. Use PURE water! There is little point having the best equipment and the freshest coffee beans if your water reeks of chlorine. Impurities in water will impart an unpleasant taste to your coffee.
  7. Use the correct water temperature.  Coffee machines will do this automatically but if you are brewing the coffee yourself, e.g., in a French press, the ideal temperature is a little less than boiling point. Allow the water to boil then let it stand for a minute before pouring into the French press.
  8. Brew for the correct length of time.  With the Espresso method, the water is typically in contact with the coffee for around 20-30 seconds.  With a French press there is still debate concerning the optimum brew time but between 3 and 5 minutes produces a great cup.
  9. Consume your coffee as soon as possible after brewing.
  10. Never re-use coffee grounds
  11. Never reheat coffee
  12. Don't use coffee that has been brewed over an hour ago.  Make a fresh brew.
